Experiential Education in our School

Today’s post comes from Nancy Leaderman, who is the Upper School Principal at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union.

Our tradition is one that celebrates the life of the mind and academic achievement–we are, after all, the ‘People of the Book.’ But we are also told that we have the obligation to make sure our children are able to undertake a livelihood and even that we are responsible for teaching them such practicalities as how to swim.

Though our Rabbis wouldn’t have used the word ‘experiential,’ they too valued this type of education–the learning by doing that is so much a part of being a truly educated person.

Here at SSDSEU, the experiential plays a crucial role in the education of your children. From community service projects, like the volunteering our seniors did this week, to our Chilean exchange program, to our Middle School Math Club’s fascinating visit to the Sony Wonders Technology Lab this week, our students are challenged to enhance, apply, and experience for themselves the learning that begins in our classrooms. Kol hakavod to our wonderful faculty who make this important learning possible and to our students who enthusiastically embrace these opportunities.
